Across cultures, the ocean has long been a place to honor and remember loved ones. Waikīkī Beach Services offers a private and respectful ash-scattering service aboard a traditional Hawaiian outrigger canoe, allowing families to say farewell on the waters of Waikīkī.
With Diamond Head in the distance, families are given time on the water to scatter the ashes, offer a prayer, share a song, or reflect together in silence. At the close of the ceremony, our crew honors your loved one with “the last wave,” surfing the canoe back toward shore in the tradition of the Waikīkī Beachboys.

- The private outrigger canoe charter accommodates one to six guests.
- The service lasts up to 60 minutes. If your family would like to return to shore earlier, please let the canoe captain know.
- Professional photography is included. A link to download your photos will be emailed after the service, generally within 48 hours.
- Flowers and lei are not provided, but you are welcome to bring your own. Only loose, fresh flowers may be placed in the ocean. All string, ribbon, wire, plastic, and other non-biodegradable materials must be removed first. See our FAQs for nearby florists.
- Wear comfortable clothing that can get wet.
- Please do not bring valuables. Waikīkī Beach Services is not responsible for lost or damaged personal belongings.

Ocean conditions can change quickly. If conditions are not safe for the outrigger canoe, the service may need to be rescheduled or canceled. We will provide as much advance notice as conditions allow.

Please note that beginning January 1, 2024, a $1 fee will be collected for each canoe participant. This fee is for the OSF, or Ocean Stewardship Fund, created by the State of Hawaiʻi and enforced by the Department of Land and Natural Resources.
