Surf Lessons in Waikīkī: Your Most Asked Questions, Answered

Thinking about taking a surf lesson in Waikīkī? Whether you’re a total beginner or just brushing up your skills, we’ve gathered the most common questions to help you get ready for your day in the waves with Waikīkī Beach Services.

Do I need experience to take a lesson?

No experience? No problem! Our surf instructors are trained to work with all levels, including first-timers. You just need to know how to swim.

Note: For safety, pregnant women or guests with prior neck or back injuries should not take surf or SUP lessons.

Is Waikīkī safe for first-time surfers?

Absolutely. Waikīkī Beach is one of the best spots in the world for learning to surf, thanks to its sandy bottom and soft, rolling waves. Plus, all of our Waikīkī Beachboys are CPR- and lifeguard-certified and pass vigorous licensing requirements to become a surf instructor with Waikīkī Beach Services.

How long are surf lessons?

Each surf lesson is 1 hour and 15 minutes long. That includes a 15-minute safety briefing on land, followed by a full hour in the water with your instructor.

Lesson times:

  • 8:30 am
  • 10:00 am
  • 11:30 am
  • 1:00 pm
  • 2:30 pm (by special request only)

What should I bring to my lesson?

Just bring:

  • Surf-ready swimsuit
  • Towel
  • Sunscreen
  • Cover-up

Missing any of the above? Head to Waikīkī Beachboy Store conveniently located in the Royal Hawaiian Hotel or shop online at waikikibeachboystore.com!

Note: Please leave valuables at home. Rashguards and surfboards are provided with your lesson.

Do you provide rashguards and surfboards?

Yes! Rashguards and surfboards are included for use during your lesson time at no additional cost.

Will someone help me paddle out?

Yes. Your certified Waikīkī Beachboy instructor will help you paddle out, position your board, and guide you through catching waves safely.

Can kids and adults take a lesson together?

Yes! Private lessons are available for up to four people. However, kids under 12 must take a one-on-one lesson for safety reasons.

For groups of five or more, please email us at [email protected].

Where are you located on Waikīkī Beach?

Royal Hawaiian location:
From Kalākaua Ave, walk down the public beach path between The Cheesecake Factory and The Outrigger Waikīkī Beach Hotel. Our desk will be directly on your right once you reach the sand.

Sheraton Waikīkī location:
Use the public beach access walkway just past the Halekulani Hotel to get to our Gray’s Beach location. For our Helumoa or Edge Infinity desks, go through the Sheraton Waikīkī Hotel.

Do I need a reservation, or can I walk up?

Reservations can be made up to 3 months in advance and up to 48 hours before your lesson. But if you’re feeling spontaneous, walk-ups are welcome—same-day availability may open up due to cancellations!

Do you take photos during lessons?

Yes, photos are taken during your lesson and are available for purchase. Our photographers aim to capture at least 10 water shots per participant. (Please note: In rare cases, photo services may be unavailable due to weather or other conditions.)

Is parking available nearby?

Yes! There are several nearby parking options:

  • Waikīkī Trade Center Garage (2255 Kūhiō Ave): $6 early bird special (6–9 am), valid until 5 pm
  • Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center
  • International Market Place Garage
  • Metered parking near Kapiʻolani Park

Can I make a reservation for a surfboard rental?

Surfboard, SUP, and boogie board rentals are first-come, first-surf and must be booked in person at one of our service desks.

I’m not a strong swimmer. Do you have life jackets?

We do not offer life jackets for surf or SUP lessons, as they interfere with paddling and maneuvering the board. If you’re not confident in your swimming abilities, we recommend trying an outrigger canoe ride instead!

Should I tip my instructor?

Tipping is always appreciated if you had a great experience. Our instructors work hard to ensure you have a safe and fun time in the ocean.
