Everything You Need to Know About Surfing in Waikīkī

Your Guide to Catching Waves in the Birthplace of Modern Surfing

By Hero Jones

Waikīkī isn’t just a beautiful beach; it’s a legendary surf destination with deep cultural roots. From the days of Duke Kahanamoku to today’s Beachboys sharing the waves with visitors from around the world, Waikīkī has always been a special place to learn, ride, and fall in love with surfing.

Whether you’re planning your first lesson with us or looking to brush up on your surf knowledge, here’s everything you need to know before paddling out.

Essential Things to Know Before You Surf

  1. Respect Surf Etiquette

Surfing has its own code of conduct. Respecting others in the water helps keep everyone safe and happy. Here are some of the key rules:

  • Don’t drop in on someone else’s wave.
  • Wait your turn in the lineup.
  • Always hold onto your board or use a leash – especially in crowded areas.
  1. Safety First

Waikīkī’s waves are beginner-friendly, but crowds can still pose risks. If you’re new, always surf with an instructor, and never push beyond your comfort zone.

  1. Know the Conditions

Waves, tides, and winds can change quickly. Our instructors and Beachboys are experts at reading the ocean. Before heading out, check with us for the safest time and spot to surf.

  1. Sunscreen & Hydration

The Hawai‘i sun is no joke! Apply reef-safe sunscreen, drink plenty of water, and wear a rashguard for extra protection.

Forgot your sunscreen or looking to pick up a rashguard? You can grab Project Reef local sunscreen and a wide selection of rashguards in-store or online at Waikīkī Beachboy. Tap the link here to shop.

If you want to borrow one during your lesson, don’t worry – our instructors will have rashguards available.

Main Surf Breaks in Waikīkī

Waikīkī is home to several iconic surf spots, each with its own personality. Here are a few you’ll hear about (and paddle out to):

Publics

Closer to the Kapiʻolani Park side, Publics is a left-breaking wave over a shallow reef. Better suited for intermediate surfers, but a fun spot to watch from shore!

Queen’s

Named after Queen Liliʻuokalani, this is a favorite among longboarders. The waves are smooth, making it ideal for stylish rides and cross-stepping. Queens is one of Waikīkī’s most iconic surf breaks, located just off Kūhiō Beach near the Duke Kahanamoku statue. Known for its playful waves and friendly vibe, it’s a favorite among locals and visitors alike. Ideal for beginners to intermediate surfers, especially on a south swell.

Canoes

Canoes is one of the most beginner-friendly surf breaks in Waikīkī, located out front and slightly to the east of the Royal Hawaiian hotel. It’s a soft, rolling reef break with long, gentle waves ideal for first-time surfers and tandem rides. Known for its historic ties to Waikīkī Beachboys and outrigger canoe surfing, Canoes offers a fun, mellow ride with a welcoming vibe.

Inside Pops AKA Puakenikeniʻs

In front of the Sheraton Waikīkī and inside Pops or Populars, Puakenikeniʻs is a mellow break great for beginners and longboarders. It offers slower, rolling waves – great for cruising or learning the basics. Easy access and beautiful views make it a go-to spot for a relaxed session. Just be careful of the reef below!

Pops/Populars

Populars (or “Pops”) is a long, mellow reef break off the Sheraton Waikīkī. It offers soft, rolling lefts and rights perfect for longboarders and cruisy rides. Best on a south swell, it’s great for all levels and tends to be less crowded due to the longer paddle out. Pops is known for its long rides, relaxed vibe, and classic Waikīkī feel.

Threes

Threes is located to the west of Pops and Paradise surf break. It is a mostly mellow reef break known for its long, peeling rights and occasional lefts. On big days, the wave can hold a hollow barrel; it’s best on a south swell and ideal for intermediate or advanced surfers looking for a longer ride than Canoes or Queens. The wave is clean and playful, perfect for longboarding or carving. Though less crowded than other Waikīkī breaks, it has a more local vibe and requires a longer paddle out, but the ride is worth it.
