Celebrating Duke Kahanamoku: The Original Waikīkī Beachboy

Every August 24, Hawaiʻi celebrates the birthday of one of its most beloved icons: Duke Paoa Kahanamoku. Born in Honolulu in 1890, Duke grew up in Waikīkī with the ocean as his playground. Long before Waikīkī became the world-famous destination it is today, Duke and his fellow Waikīkī beach boys could be found surfing, swimming, sharing stories, and welcoming visitors to the shores of Hawaiʻi.

Duke was an incredible athlete, becoming a world-record-setting swimmer and five-time Olympic medalist. But his legacy reaches far beyond the medals. Known as the father of modern surfing, Duke helped introduce surfing to people around the world while sharing something even more meaningful: the spirit of aloha.

For Duke, the ocean was more than a place to compete. It was a place to connect. He taught swimming and surfing, shared his knowledge of the water, and became known for his generosity, humility, and willingness to help others. His life as a waterman reflected the values that continue to make Hawaiʻi special today.

Duke also embodied the spirit of the Waikīkī beachboy. Beachboys were more than surfers—they were ocean lovers, storytellers, instructors, and hosts who shared their knowledge of Hawaiʻi with visitors from around the world. Whether helping someone catch their first wave or taking visitors out for outrigger canoe surfing, they created experiences that connected people to the ocean and to the culture of Waikīkī.
